Job Description
About Zwakman Nabizai Construction Company (ZNCC)
Job Summary
The Structural Designer shall be responsible for the analysis, design, verification, and preparation of technical documentation for structural systems associated with high-voltage transmission lines and substations. The position covers transmission towers, steel poles, substation gantries, equipment support structures, structural steel connections, and associated foundations.
The incumbent shall ensure that all designs comply with applicable engineering codes, utility standards, project specifications, safety requirements, and quality standards. The role requires close coordination with electrical, civil, geotechnical, procurement, fabrication, and construction teams to deliver safe, reliable, economical, and construction-ready structural designs.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Analysis and Design
- Perform structural analysis and design of lattice steel transmission towers, suspension and tension structures, dead-end towers, steel poles, gantries, and substation equipment support structures.
- Design and verify structural steel members, connections, base plates, anchor bolts, and reinforced concrete foundations.
- Assess structural adequacy under applicable dead, wind, ice, conductor tension, broken-conductor, seismic, equipment, short-circuit, construction, and maintenance loads, as relevant to the project.
- Evaluate structural stability, member strength, buckling, deflection, foundation bearing capacity, uplift, overturning, and settlement in accordance with applicable design criteria.
- Review existing structures and recommend strengthening or modification where required.
Design Documentation and Deliverables
- Prepare design calculations, structural analysis reports, general arrangement drawings, detailed design drawings, foundation details, material specifications, and bills of quantities.
- Develop structural loading schedules, foundation reaction tables, steel member schedules, and connection details.
- Prepare and maintain design assumptions, calculation records, technical specifications, and revision-controlled engineering documents.
- Review fabrication and shop drawings for compliance with approved design documents, where assigned.
Coordination and Technical Support
- Coordinate with transmission line engineers to verify tower loading criteria, conductor configurations, structural clearances, and tower geometry.
- Coordinate with electrical engineers and equipment manufacturers to obtain equipment loads, support reactions, mounting requirements, and allowable structural movements.
- Liaise with civil and geotechnical engineers regarding soil parameters, groundwater conditions, foundation selection, and site constraints.
- Provide technical support during procurement, fabrication, erection, construction, inspection, and commissioning, as required.
- Review technical queries, proposed design changes, material substitutions, and nonconformities within the assigned scope.
Quality, Safety, and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable IEC, ASCE, IEEE, ISO, national building codes, and approved utility standards, as relevant to the design.
- Conduct or facilitate independent checking and verification of calculations and drawings.
- Identify structural design risks, document assumptions, and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
- Ensure designs are practical, durable, maintainable, cost-effective, and suitable for the project’s environmental and operating conditions.
- Maintain accurate engineering records and incorporate approved review comments and design revisions.
Qualifications
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or an equivalent relevant discipline; a master’s degree is an advantage.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in structural analysis and design, preferably including high-voltage transmission lines and substations.
- Demonstrated experience in the design of transmission towers, substation gantries, steel support structures, connections, and reinforced concrete foundations.
- Knowledge of applicable structural design codes, transmission line loading criteria, geotechnical parameters, and foundation design principles.
- Professional engineering registration or certification, where required by applicable national regulations, is an advantage.
- Experience in power transmission, substation, EPC, utility, or engineering consultancy projects is preferred.
Required Technical Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in structural analysis and design software, such as STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, ETABS, or equivalent tools.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office; familiarity with BIM tools and structural detailing software is an advantage.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, equipment datasheets, geotechnical reports, loading schedules, and technical specifications.
- Strong understanding of steel member design, connection design, reinforced concrete, foundation engineering, structural stability, and load combinations.
- Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and auditable structural calculations, drawings, technical reports, and bills of quantities.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, coordination, and technical communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple design assignments, meet project deadlines, and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Commitment to engineering ethics, quality assurance, occupational safety, and continuous professional development.
