Job Description
About Zwakman Nabizai Construction Company (ZNCC)
Job Summary
The Electrical Design Engineer shall be responsible for the planning, engineering, design, analysis, and preparation of technical documentation for high-voltage transmission lines and substations. The position covers electrical system design, transmission line parameters, conductor and earth-wire selection, substation primary electrical systems, equipment sizing and selection, insulation coordination, electrical clearances, earthing and lightning protection interfaces, and associated technical specifications.
The incumbent shall ensure that all electrical designs comply with applicable international standards, national regulations, utility requirements, project specifications, and safety standards. The role requires close coordination with structural, civil, protection and control, telecommunications, equipment suppliers, procurement, and construction teams to deliver safe, reliable, efficient, and cost-effective electrical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Transmission Line Electrical Design
- Perform electrical design and engineering for high-voltage overhead transmission lines, including line configurations, conductor selection, earth wires, and optical ground wire (OPGW).
- Undertake or verify conductor sag-tension calculations, electrical clearances, conductor loading inputs, and required ground and crossing clearances in coordination with the transmission line design team.
- Evaluate current-carrying capacity, corona effects, radio interference, audible noise, and power losses where applicable.
- Determine insulation requirements, insulator string configurations, creepage distances, and lightning performance in accordance with project conditions and applicable standards.
- Coordinate tower spotting, phase arrangements, conductor attachment points, and electrical clearance envelopes with structural and survey teams.
- Review route profiles, crossing schedules, and technical requirements affecting transmission line electrical performance.
- Support the assessment of lightning shielding, shielding failure, and line insulation performance where required by the project scope.
Substation Electrical Design
- Prepare electrical designs for high-voltage substations, including air-insulated substations (AIS) and gas-insulated substations (GIS), as applicable.
- Develop and review single-line diagrams, substation layouts, busbar arrangements, equipment layouts, and electrical interconnection diagrams.
- Specify and size major primary equipment, including power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches, current transformers, voltage transformers, surge arresters, insulators, and busbar systems.
- Prepare equipment technical specifications, datasheets, technical evaluation criteria, and equipment schedules.
- Perform or coordinate insulation coordination, lightning protection, short-circuit withstand, busbar sizing, and electrical clearance assessments.
- Verify equipment ratings against system voltage, continuous current, short-circuit levels, switching duties, and applicable operating conditions.
- Coordinate cable routing, power supply requirements, and interfaces with protection, control, metering, and communication systems.
- Review manufacturer drawings and technical documents to ensure compliance with approved project requirements.
Electrical Studies, Calculations, and Documentation
- Perform or coordinate electrical calculations and studies, including load flow, short-circuit, voltage regulation, power losses, insulation coordination, and lightning performance, as required by the assignment.
- Prepare design reports, calculations, technical specifications, bills of quantities, equipment lists, cable schedules, and electrical drawings.
- Review system grounding and earthing requirements and coordinate earthing grid design with the responsible specialist.
- Coordinate auxiliary AC/DC power supply requirements, battery and charger sizing, and station service interfaces were included in the scope.
- Prepare design documents in accordance with approved standards, engineering procedures, and project document control requirements.
- Review design comments, update drawings, and maintain accurate records of assumptions, calculations, and revisions.
Coordination and Technical Support
- Coordinate with structural and civil engineers regarding equipment foundations, structural loads, support arrangements, cable trenches, and electrical clearances.
- Liaise with protection and control engineers regarding protection interfaces, instrument transformer requirements, interlocking, metering, and control signals.
- Coordinate with equipment manufacturers, utilities, contractors, and other stakeholders to resolve technical issues.
- Provide technical support during procurement, factory acceptance testing, installation, site testing, commissioning, and handover, as required.
- Review technical queries, proposed equipment substitutions, deviations, and design modifications within the assigned scope.
Quality, Safety, and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable IEC, IEEE, CIGRE, national electrical regulations, utility standards, and project specifications, as relevant.
- Verify electrical equipment ratings, conductor capacities, insulation levels, clearances, and design calculations before submission.
- Identify electrical design risks, including electric shock, arc flash, insulation failure, lightning exposure, and equipment failure, and coordinate appropriate mitigation measures.
- Participate in design reviews, independent checking, risk assessments, and technical audits.
- Ensure that design documentation is complete, coordinated, traceable, and suitable for procurement, construction, operation, and maintenance.
Qualifications
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or an equivalent relevant discipline; a master’s degree in Power Systems or High Voltage Engineering is an advantage.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in electrical design and engineering, preferably involving high-voltage transmission lines and substations.
- Demonstrated experience in transmission line electrical design, substation primary system design, equipment selection, and preparation of engineering calculations and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of high-voltage equipment ratings, insulation coordination, conductor design, electrical clearances, short-circuit requirements, and substation configurations.
- Experience with utility, EPC, power transmission, substation, or engineering consultancy projects is preferred.
- Professional engineering registration or certification, where required by applicable national regulations, is an advantage.
Required Technical Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in electrical engineering software such as ETAP, Dig SILENT, PLS-CADD, PSCAD, or equivalent tools, depending on the assigned responsibilities.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office; familiarity with EPLAN, BIM coordination tools.
